The next day, Joseph came over and helped her prepare dinner (the midday meal) and supper. She said he was alone in the kitchen for part of the time when the tea and coffee were being made, since she was working between the kitchen and the out kitchen at the time. Joseph gave his father some tea with his supper, and soon afterward he was âtaken with a very severe attack of cramps and vomiting and was terribly sick.â She said his vomit was âof an ugly slimy, green nature.â She was also sick after supper that night.
Joseph slept in the same room with his father that night and already had the tea and coffee heating when Mrs. Boyle came downstairs on Sunday morning. She and Simon each drank some teaâJoseph did notâand they were both sick afterward. Joseph made dinner on Sunday afternoon, and afterward she and Simon were both sick again. âJoseph didnât seem to be affected by anything he ate,â she said. Joseph made supper that evening, and again his father threw up afterward. When she got up on Monday morning, Joseph had already made breakfast. After drinking some tea, she was sick yet again. âMy limbs seemed to be all drawing up. I went out to the privy, then went through Mr. Klineâs room up stairs. When I passed through Mr. Kline was as bad as ever. During the rest of Monday and Tuesday I was sick in bed.â She noted that Joseph did all the cooking on Monday and Tuesday.
Simonâs health improved on Wednesday and Thursday, and Mrs. Boyle was also feeling much better by Thursday. Late Friday evening, Simon told her he planned to go out on Saturday. Mrs. Boyle went to bed shortly after and said Joseph âpassed through my room several times during the night.â When she got up Saturday morning, he said that he would not give his father any breakfast because he had given him some medicine and he might throw up. He went in a few times that morning and told her his father was sleeping. She said she would go in and clean his room, and Joseph said, âYou donât need to bother.â Then he asked her for the key to his fatherâs bureau upstairs, and she gave it to him. Simon slept the rest of the morning and afternoon, and Mrs. Boyle started to grow concerned. âJoe went in the room and shook his father and tried to awaken him. I told him to awaken him by degrees because he might be under the influence of the medicine. Joe said, âI hope father has not taken any medicine from that bottle,â adding, âI fear father is sleeping too much.ââ She said there was a rattling sound in his throat and he was sweating profusely.
Joseph sent for Michael Thompson, who was very concerned when he saw Simon. Thompson and Mrs. Boyle told Joseph to get the doctor. When he returned without a doctor, he said, âI told the doctor how he was and the doctor said he was just sleeping.
